In the 1960s, racial segregation in the United States was finally abolished, at least on paper. But in the southern states like Alabama, there was still opposition to integration. Likewise in the Birmingham of 1973, where Tony Nathan (Caleb Castille) is one of the black students who are admitted to Woodlawn High School. Students and teachers behave hostilely, and there are serious crimes. Also the previous players of the football team are available to Tony and the other black boys.
But coach Tandy Geralds (Nic Bishop) recognizes his talent and is committed to ensuring that the athletes pull together in the field together.
